Servicing the Student Body With 20,000+ Safe Rides in 100% Electric Vehicles!

After the exhilarating experience of exploring the streets and marketplaces of New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, India in open-air “tuk-tuks”, Buzz Rides founders Joey Skavroneck, Parker Draughon, and Chris Jones conceived a business model that they wanted to bring back to the United States. Thus in September 2013, Buzz Rides was launched at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Buzz Rides is a late-night transportation service for college students as well as a mobile marketing platform for businesses looking to promote their brand to the college demographic. Joey (CEO), Parker (President), and Chris (CFO) have been overwhelmed by the response Buzz Rides has received at its first campus. Servicing the student body by giving over 20,000 safe, free rides in 100% electric vehicles that cut down on over 50,000 lbs. of CO2 tailpipe emissions a year, Buzz Rides is looking to expand to other universities, including ECU, Duke, UGA, and USC.

Buzz Rides

It has been an exciting year for Buzz Rides. Milestones include receiving a federal Clean Air Fuel Technologies (CFAT) Grant for $15,000 to purchase a Fast Charger that will allow Buzz Rides to charge vehicles faster and operate more vehicles at once. Buzz Rides is working to install this device now. The Buzz Rides website has long been up ( and is currently undergoing upgrades, and the Buzz Rides App can be found in the Apple App Store. The app will be launched during the 2014-2015 school year, and it will help to streamline the Buzz Rides pickup/drop off process. Buzz Rides has competed and placed in several entrepreneurship competitions such as the Carolina Challenge, and has been showcased by the University in events such as the Kenan-Flagler Business Symposium and shuttling the UNC Board of Governors around campus. Buzz Rides is in the final stages of securing a contract agreement to receive support from the University.

In early 2014, Buzz Rides was accepted into the Cube. The Cube has offered resources such as weekly mentorship from entrepreneurs Alan Fenwick and Alec Guettel, working space, and access to pro-bono legal and accounting support that have been invaluable to Buzz Rides. The partnership with law-school student Chris Bryant of the Duke Startup Ventures Clinic has yielded fantastic legal support for Buzz Rides, including the write-up of several IP Agreements and Logo Trademarking.

By establishing a list of short-term goals and long-range objectives, the Cube pushes Buzz Rides everyday to be the best it can be, incentivizing the organization to work hard with much needed seed capital.

Buzz Rides looks to finish the year strong, placing itself in a solid position for the summer and the 2014-2015 school year.

Look for us out on the streets!
